MDPV Bath Salt Abuse Lab Testing

Bath Salts are a type of designer drug that contain amphetamine derivatives similar to ecstasy (MDMA).  The compound 3,4-Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) is one type of amphetamine derivative that can be found in bath salts, along with others such as Methylone and Mephedrone.

MDPV testing is typically performed by gas chromatography- mass spectrometry (GCMS) or by liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (LC-MS).  Most laboratory drug screen panels do not contain MDPV, however, many laboratories are now adding MDPV testing as bath salt abuse is becoming more widespread.

Since bath salts can contain other types of amphetamine derivatives, a negative MDPV test does not rule out bath salt abuse.  Most drug screens and confirmatory tests for amphetamines will not detect MDPV or other bath salts.  Based on other amphetamines, it is estimated that MDPV can be detected for up to 2-3 days following use.
